  1. So this is a pre-TSR EPT? I must have missed the part where you talked about/promised these images. Looks "cool" to me, so I selected the appropriate box. I just bought the original TSR boxed set this summer and have been seriously thinking about starting up Tekumel game next spring. Are you a big Tekumel fan?

  2. Carl,
--I am an admirer, but in comparison to a great number of others, know relatively little about Tekumel.

Of the several products that I own, I have thoroughly read perhaps (being generous) 10% of the data.
--I would say that I am more inspired by both Tekumel and Jorune than I have a passion to game in either of the worlds (although, by its relatvely smaller scale, Jorune is easier for me to game), and this inspiration is one part of the impetus to have created my Urutsk Cycle's detailed and 'realised' setting over the past 25-or-so years. :D

The original boxed set of the TSR EPT is gorgeous; I owned it briefly.
--If you do run a game, please write it up, as I would love to read the accounts.

    Thanks,

  3. Fascinating, thanks for posting the images. I remember finding EPT far too much to get my head around and I couldn't persuade anyone to play, whereas like yourself, my gaming group at the time found Jorune easier to game with.

  4. Sean: You are most welcome. :)

I can certainly understand the 'too much info.'-aspect of Tekumel.
--Even with all of the 2nd Edition sourcebooks for Jorune, I never felt as though every bit of minutia required gaming with the authors to grasp the daily pace of life among the Maudra, Bronth, and the Ramian my PC or players' characters would meet on the street.

That said, I find reading the Swords & Glory sourcebooks more enjoyable than reading most fiction, as it lies closer to my interests in history, human behaviour, and cultures.

  5. Isn't this the copy that was given to Old Geezer's ex-wife?

  6. In answer to the question, yes, this is a facsimile copy of the two-volume set of mimeographed rules for "Empire of the Petal Throne". Prof. Barker gave copies to his original players, along with one to myself several years later, on the occasion of the first-ever game of EPT on August 20th, 1974.

This particular copy is Deborah Naffziger's copy, and it is now in the Aethervox collection of Tekumel documents and manuscripts. (Deborah is one of the Trustees of the Aethervox Collections.) As part of our archival efforts, we've digitized this set of books and it's in both a jpeg facsimile version and a transcribed 'clean' version. At some point, it is hoped that the Tekumel Foundation will be able to make this available to Tekumel fans.

The two mimeographed pages recently sold on E-bay by Old Geezer are the last two pages of the mimeo edition, and are additions made by Prof. Barker after his first few games; they are part of the copy in our collection, and are included in the electronic versions.

  7. Very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm constantly finding little bits of Tekumel AND EPT system that inspire me.
