[The Long Path]

Both of my parents were more than a little taken with the Left Path protagonist personified in various forms as Satan, Lucifer, or simply, The Devil.

Mom's love of Goethe's Faust' portrayal of Mephistopheles and the joyous, girlish smile as her eyes twinkled during her depiction of the rose petals being cast down at the close of the play, and my innocent happy confusion at her elation.

She would also occasionally call me her Bose Engle (naughty angel)

When we watched, snatch, together for the first time, my father was already in decline and really had little understanding of what was happening in the film, but would look on at mom and me howling and tittering with laughter at every horrid thing in that wonderfully-ridiculously awful film.

But, back in his better years, my father confessed to me that although he felt very uneasy with even science fiction, and was completely suspicious of fantasy, he loved devil movies, including the Al Pacino law firm movie, and the other one. He also became giddy with the naughtiness of even entertaining such wicked little things as in those harmless films, that a little bit of what ills stood between us was abated seeing him in childlike joy at it all.

When I first saw The Ninth Gate, purchased by my mother if I recall correctly, I was ... -- I had found my new favourite film...

The end credits alone held my beauty-swayed eyes until the very last sound and end credit.

I have joked in the past about a sort of rivalry with the guys at Open Studio Jazz in St. Louis, MO., but the fact is that I catch a video-short of theirs, or as I am learning about some other aspect of Western Tradition music, I run across some related video from them and I watch and learn ... something.
